  1. God was simply revealing a truth in the OT that he indeed has an elect people. Abraham, Job, David, the Apostle Paul are all elect and members of the Israel of God or spiritual Israel. This is not replacement theology it’s merely that the fleshly revelation came in due time with the advent of the nation of physical Israel but the promises and the blessings are to the true Israel and the true Seed (Jesus) the child or promise. This was also revealed in Isaac and Ishmael – see Galatians Ch 4. Hosea mentions how this physical people will be set aside and another will be called the people of God. Remember we the redeemed are all this peculiar people, a holy nation, a royal priesthood. A mystery we see in Scripture is that the physical comes first before the spiritual. We see this with Jacob/Esau, the blessing of Ephraim and Manasseh (reversed hands), and John the Baptist saying that which is after him is preferred before because it was. So I see a principle that God has a definite spiritual reality, He expresses it in due time in the temporal/physical world but then completely realizes the reality at some point in the future that reveals the full depth of that truth that we may understand it as His people. I find this principle extremely important in understanding theology. I believe dispensational theology and covenant theology are wrong in various ways and are man made systems. I also prefer New Covenant Theology NCT – see John Reisinger’s book Abraham’s Four Seeds. I believe you are seeing things correctly at definitely the question of who are the people of God is a key to understanding God’s Truth.
